ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY AND MODERN EQUIPMENTS TO PRODUCE STEEL BARS AND INDUSTRIAL PROFILES
GIIC ramps up production to 11 million tons
 Last Update:     26/09/2010 10:03:17
ArabSteel - ABB has successfully commissioned a new pellet production line at Gulf Industrial Investment Company, Bahrain, this year. Production at the new iron ore pellet plant is rated at six million tons of iron ore pellets per year. However, after commissioning the new expansion in the line, its production capacity doubled to more than eleven million tons per year.
The Swiss company haven't mentioned any more details about the contract awarded for the expansion, but it mentioned that it had an "acceptance certificate" from GIIC at the end of June 2010.
The cost of the expansion awarded to ABB that have been completed in cooperation with Kobe Steel of Japan amounted to more than US$500 million funded through banks. The contract was to supply Gulf Industrial Investment Company (GIIC) with electrical equipment and control systems to support the expansion of their plant. Mechanical and electrical installations were concluded in spring 2009 and the first pellets were produced mid of 2009.
GIIC, the first pelletizing plant in Bahrain, was established in 1984 and produces high quality direct reduction grade iron oxide pellets at 5 million tpy, with investments up to US$1.5 billion. Its new annual rated capacity, after its success in accompanying the continuous growth in industrial, building and construction projects, is eleven million tons. The iron ore concentrate shipped to GIIC is being grinded, then mixed with additives and processed to iron ore pellets in a grate kiln.
GIIC have also signed an MOU with the Canadian Northland Recourses to provide the company with 6.75 million tons of iron ore up to 2014.
